Since our childhood we have heard of the word Non metals.
As per their name, they are opposite of Metals .

But in this article I am gonna tell you some interesting and random facts about Non metals. 

So, Let's get started. 

#1. Sulphuric acid is known as oil of vitriol. 

 is called as "oil of vitriol" by medieval European chemists because it was prepared by roasting "green vitriol" (FeSO4) in an iron container.

#2. Lightning Storms cause nitrogen fixation.

Easily one of my personal favorites. Lightning storms account for 8% of nitrogen fixation that occurs on Earth.

#3. Fluorine is the only element in the periodic table which does not have a Oxide. 

Since, It is the most electronegative element in the periodic table. 

#4. Protium (which is a hydrogen isotope) is only one isotope in periodic table having zero neutron. 

#5. Liquid hydrogen is used as rocket fuel. 


#6. Sulphur Dioxide, which is a by-product of jets depletes the ozone layer. 

Sulphur di oxide is a reducing agent 
And can deplete the ozone layer. 

#7. Hard water is hard due to the presence of bicarbonate, Chloride and sulphate salt.

Potassium Chloride is the most suitable to remove permanent hardness of water. 

#8. Nonstick utensil is made up of teflon. 

The non-stick coating called Teflon, or Polytetrafluoroethylene, was accidentally invented by Roy Plunkett while trying to create a new refrigerant. 

#9. Silver Bromide AgBr is used in photography. 


#10. Diamond has maximum refractive index. 


The refractive index of diamond is 2.42
Which means it slows down the speed of light by 2.42 times as compared to speed of light in vacuum. 

#11. Chloroform in sunlight forms poisonous gas phosgene. 

#12. Phosphine gas is used in Voyage as Holmes signal. 

Phosphine gets ignited spontaneously as it comes in contact with air. Thus a bright red flame is produced which is accompanied by huge smoke due to the burning of phosphine. This serves as a signal to the approaching ships.

As a matter of fact,

which lower the freezing point of liquids. 

#17. Polonium is the element in the periodic table which has maximum number of isotopes.

Polonium is a radioactive metal, sometimes called 'perfect poison'. 

#18. Two of the Non-metals—
Hydrogen and Helium —make up over 99 per cent of the observable Universe.

#19. While one non metal Oxygen—
 makes up close to half of the Earth's crust, Oceans and Atmosphere. 
Living organisms are also composed almost entirely of nonmetals.

#20. Solid oxygen is a pale blue solid. 
It exists in three modifications with transition points at minus 230.6°C and minus 255.6°C.
